Miss Hawaii USA Savannah Gankiewicz, who had formerly been the first runner-up in the 2023 Miss USA pageant, has moved forward to be proclaimed Miss USA. This comes in the midst of a dramatic two weeks of resignations and charges against the organization that is known as Miss USA.
“Although this decision was not made lightly, I firmly believe that this opportunity was for me, and I am willing to make a positive impact with this organization that is close to my heart,” said the 28-year-old recipient of the title, who was crowned by the governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, during a ceremony that took place on Wednesday in Honolulu, Hawaii.
“I am committed to playing an active role and making a difference in the world. As a result of my training as a certified mental health first responder and my training in the prevention of bullying and suicide, I am aware of the need of making well-being a priority and advocating for people who are in need. “I am determined to lead by example and empower the class of 2024 and beyond,” she said as she addressed an audience at a hotel in Waikiki, with a small aquarium in the background. “I believe that true change begins from within,” she said.
The position was taken over by Gankiewicz, who succeeded Noelia Voigt, who abruptly stepped down from her position earlier this month. However, in her resignation letter to the Miss Universe organization, which CNN was able to receive, Voigt accused CEO Laylah Rose of “actively building a culture of fear and control.” Voigt claimed her mental health as the reason for her decision to resign.
“They were mistreated, abused, intimidated, and cornered,” the moms of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA have stated in their statement of condemnation.
She wrote that Miss USA management frequently failed to provide her with travel accommodations or a “effective handler,” which results in one instance in which Voigt claims that she was sexually harassed during a Christmas pageant in Sarasota, Florida, while she was alone with an unidentified person in a car. This was one of the claims that she made.
A request for comment from CNN was not met with a response from either the Miss Universe organization or Rose, who was represented by Miss USA.
Two days after Voigt resigned from her position as Miss Teen USA 2023, Uma Sofia Srivastava also resigned from her title. She stated on Instagram that her principles “no longer fully align with the direction of the organization.”
When Rose made his first formal appearance after the controversy, he did not respond to any of the allegations that were made against him. She asked Gankiewicz to “embrace this moment of influence and let her words carry the power of positive change,” and she thanked her corporate partners and sponsors for their “unwavering support.” At the same time, she welcomed Gankiewicz into the Miss USA family.
Both the Miss Teen USA and Miss USA pageants for this year are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, according to Rose, and will be broadcast on the CW network.
In April, the CW made an announcement regarding a multi-year agreement to broadcast the two pageants. However, in light of the current claims, USA Today reported on Monday that the network was “evaluating” its connection with the Miss USA organization.
At the present time, the position of Miss Teen USA is still currently unfilled. Stephanie Skinner, a resident of New York, released a public statement on Instagram in which she expressed her refusal to be proclaimed the winner of the 2023 competition.
On Tuesday, the mothers of Voigt and Srivastava appeared on “Good Morning America,” where they stated that their daughters were still bound by stringent nondisclosure restrictions in their contracts and were unable to discuss their experiences.
“Her dream job turned into a nightmare,” Barbara Srivastava said. “She was miserable in her job.” “The young ladies made the decision to forego their lifelong desire of winning a crown or a national title. Why would two young women choose to forego that opportunity?
She continued by saying that during the year that she was in power, her daughters were “mistreated, abused, intimidated, and cornered.” CNN has made repeated requests for comment, but neither Miss USA nor the Miss Universe Organization has responded to any of those requests.
Just a few days after Miss USA resigned, Miss Teen USA also resigned today.
Following Voigt’s resignation, many of the current Miss USAs took to Instagram to voice their public support for her. However, this week, Arianna Lemus, who was the current Miss Colorado USA, decided to completely abandon her title.
The integrity of my principles has been breached. On Wednesday, she stated to CNN that the notion of pageantry does not include the act of silencing women. “As a collective, the 2023 (Miss USA) class came together in solidarity with Noelia, but that wasn’t enough for me… and that’s why I quit.”
At the next Miss USA pageant, which will take place in August, a new contender from the class of 2024 state titleholders will receive the national crown. Gankiewicz will only keep the title of Miss USA for a few months over the summer.
She acknowledged the constraints of her position by posting the following on Instagram: “With the short time I have as Miss USA, it is my intention to draw attention and focus on the rebuilding of Lahaina on my island of Maui.” Additionally, I am looking forward to assisting the delegates of the 2024 Miss USA pageant in making the transition to a new phase of the competition and providing support to them as they pursue their own paths to the crown.
On the other hand, Lemus advocated for immediate action to be made in order to safeguard candidates for the year 2024 and later from being bound by restrictive contracts. It was on “Good Morning America” that Voigt’s mother, Jackeline Voigt, expressed her opinion that the participants ought to rethink their decision to compete.
“Look what happened to Noelia and UmaSofia,” he replied in response. “Right now, it’s not the right time to participate.” In addition to Christy Choi, Jacqui Palumbo At 9:31 am on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, GMT+5:30·4 minutes a read
