After the armed attack that took place in the village of Banjska, which is located in the northern part of Kosovo, the European Union is not prepared to impose punitive measures on Serbia.
This is according to diplomatic sources in Brussels, who stated that the European bloc’s double standards do not constitute anything new. as well as specialists from other countries.
The only explanations for the delay of the case, according to them, are appeals in procedural areas and the absence of a definitive report from the Kosovo authorities concerning the matter.
According to the Western world, there is no desire to take any action against [Serbian President Aleksandar] Vučić or anyone else implicated in the situation. An analyst named Toby Vogel, who is an associate of the Council for Democratization Policies, says that the West is dependent on Serbia and does not wish to create any disruptions to this delicate relationship.
The Kosovo government, on the other hand, is adamant about slapping sanctions on Serbia since it claims that a terrorist act was carried out against it.
In Banjska, which is located in the Zvecan municipality, on September 24, 2023, an armed group of Serbs was responsible for the death of Afrim Bunjaku, who was a sergeant with the Kosovo Police.
In addition, three Serbian assailants were killed as a consequence of another round of fighting.
The Kosovo government deems the Serbian state accountable for this attack, although the official Belgrade government is opposed to this position.
After some time had passed, Millan Radoicic, who had previously served as the vice president of Lista Serbe, the largest party of Serbs in Kosovo, admitted that he was responsible for the attack.
In spite of the fact that the Serbian authorities have initiated legal proceedings against him, they have decided to release him from the measure of custody on the condition that he does not return to Kosovo during the duration of the investigation.
He is the subject of an arrest warrant that was issued by the International Police Organization, which is more often referred to as INTERPOL.
Western nations have issued a vehement condemnation of the attack that took place in Banjska; yet, the punitive actions that were requested by the authorities in Kosovo have never been carried out.
Regarding the assault that took place in Banjska, the European Union acknowledged a report that was forty-eight pages long and was submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo.
On the other hand, sources in Brussels have stated that it is not adequate, calculating that it contains political overtones, and that Kosovo need a report that is drafted by the legal system.
Several times, the authorities in Kosovo have voiced their disapproval of the State Prosecutor’s Office for the fact that it has not yet issued a report on the events that took place in Banjska and has not yet filed an indictment.
On the other hand, the Prosecution Council of Kosovo has requested that the Government of Kosovo refrain from interfering in the operations of the justice system. They have made this request on the grounds that the statements made by the government are tendentious.
Brussels asserts that it does not have the authority to carry out such a task. The European Union has conveyed that the attack occurred on the territory of Kosovo and that the authorities in that region are capable of handling the situation.
The attack that took place in Banjska was referred to be a terrorist attack by EU officials when they spoke publicly.
On the other hand, the incident in Banjska is portrayed as having been carried out solely by “heavily armed individuals” in the section of the EU Progress Report for 2023 that is devoted to Serbia.
In response to the question of why the European Union has not yet reached a conclusion regarding the matter, EU spokesman Peter Stano has not provided a response.
Over the course of the past, he has stated on multiple occasions that they are awaiting the final report from Kosovo.
The European Parliament has called for the punishment of Serbia, but the Council and the European Commission are the ones who are responsible for deciding whether or not to carry out such a punishment.
During an interview with Radio Free Europe, Alejandro Esteso Perez, an analyst and researcher who specializes in Balkan issues and EU enlargement, stated that the European Union does not like to put Serbia in the spotlight.
“He does not want to risk a potential reaction of Vucic, either by getting closer to Russia or China – which he is already doing – and he understands that without Serbia there can be no Kosovo-Serbia dialogue” .
Vogel, an analyst, has reported that he has received information from legislators in the European Union that Serbia is being attacked in private meetings. On the other hand, he asserts that “if something is not said publicly, it is as if it was not said at all.”
The Western leaders have issued a clear statement acknowledging that the event will be thoroughly investigated and that Vučić is required to formally reject any military activity that may occur in the vicinity of Kosovo.
While this is going on, Analyst Perez is of the opinion that more actions are required:
