The runways of a former airport in New York City, where families with children wander, are being whipped against by gusts of wind.
The area, which is located “in the middle of nowhere,” is in urgent need of housing for around 1,800 migrants. This acreage is a metaphor of the reception crisis that is rattling the American megaphone.
We “restart our lives from scratch” on this remote region of runways, roads, and hangars on a bay at the southern point of Brooklyn, according to some of the country’s asylum seekers who spoke with AFP. These asylum seekers come from Latin America and West Africa, but they also come from China and Russia, who were unsuccessful at Floyd Bennett Field.
Under enormous tents, in addition to communal areas for meals and administrative operations, there is space for up to five hundred families to sleep in private spaces close to each other.
According to David Fernandez, an Ecuadorian who is 32 years old, the city is a bit complicated because of the cold, the noise, and the fact that it is located in a secluded area. After more than an hour of driving, we are able to make out the towers of Manhattan, which are visible on the horizon. In the immediate vicinity, there are no stores or services.
According to David, whose children, ages 11 and 7, secured a seat in a school in Brooklyn, “we shouldn’t complain because they help us […] We have a roof to rest, blankets,” David says.
In November, he left his nation, which had become a victim of the violence perpetrated by drug traffickers, along with his wife and children. In the end, the family arrived in New York after a ten-day trek via Central America, followed by two and a half days of bus travel from Texas. After that, they tried their luck in Ohio before making their way back to New York.
He goes on to say, “Until I am able to find a job and a house, I am required to remain in the camp.”
Long white tents at Floyd Bennett Field, which are inaccessible to journalists due to the presence of long fences, are a manifestation of what the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, refers to as a “humanitarian crisis.” These tents are located a significant distance from the border between the United States and Mexico, which is traversed by thousands of migrants on a daily basis, and are the subject of political blockade between Democrats and Republicans.
In addition to being the entry point for millions of immigrants to the United States during the 20th century, the state of New York is legally obligated to ensure that no homeless person is left wandering the streets. Beginning in the spring of 2022, the City has been providing emergency housing for over 180,000 individuals who have fled Venezuela, Ecuador, and Colombia, as well as Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Russia, and Haiti in particular.
There are currently over 210 locations, including hotels, gymnasiums, and “humanitarian centers” like the former airport, where almost 65,000 people are still being accommodated. These locations include hotels and gymnasiums.

“To discourage”
According to Victoria Marin, a resident of Brooklyn who arranges automobile convoys to supply blankets and warm clothes to those camping here, “many arrived without having a friend or neighbor to help them.” Others arrived without having anyone to assist them.
She stated that every time they arrived, there were between forty and fifty people who ran to the car and asked for things such as blankets, coats, shoes, food, strollers, and bags.
The selection of the location has resulted in criticism. When it comes to housing homeless families with children, Floyd Bennett Field is not at all an appropriate location. “The families are really in the middle of nowhere […] there is no privacy […] the showers and toilets are in separate tents,” complains Dave Giffen, director of the Coalition for the Homeless association. “There is no privacy.” safe haven?
As a result of a storm that occurred in January, the authorities were forced to evacuate all of the residents and rehouse them for one night in a high school in Brooklyn. The students were unable to attend classes the following day, which caused the parents and political officials to get angry.
Dave Giffen asserts that the City of New York, which has been “left alone” by the federal government and the State of New York in the face of the problem, “wants to discourage migrants from coming to New York.”
The town hall contends that migrants are provided with food, that they are allowed to receive medical care, and that social workers assist them in all of the procedures that they go through in order to obtain asylum, receive training, look for work, or send their children to formal education. Through the operation of a bus service, travel is made easier.
In addition, Eric Adams has been stating for a number of months that “we have no more space.” In addition to criticizing Joe Biden, the Democrat demands that the federal government provide assistance and speed up the procedures for granting work permits to asylum seekers.
“My goal here is to work, to study, to emancipate myself [from aid] from the government, and to fight for my children,” Maricruz Figueroa, a Venezuelan who walks on the streets, assures. “I want to fight for my children.” while wearing a red sports jersey with the word “Brooklyn” inscribed on the back, they were driving on the roads of the former airfield.
“This is a safe country,” says Luis Moreno, who is from Ecuador. “But the most important thing is that this country is safe.” In contrast to the third world country from where I originate, a country that is rich in opportunity and does not have any instances of criminal activity.
