Diabolical" is a superhero-hating animated anthology like the main series.

On a same theme, anthologies offer a wide range of perspectives, which is both its drawback and its appeal. Conflicts are as valuable as consensus. The irregularity makes the weakest episodes much less appealing than the best.

Thankfully, ‘The Boys presents: Diabolical’, Prime Video’s superhero satire’s spin-off and appetizer for the third season, scores well. Without losing the format’s attraction, the series’ diverse universe underscores one of its core values: ‘The Boys’ is a hideous caricature but also a tragicomedy with empathy.

‘Diabolical’ has eight fifteen-minute episodes (ten without credits) that each offer a distinct view on ‘The Boys’. Some directly affect the plot (Butcher or Patriot), others have a tangential relationship (Profundo’s special appearances), and others use an element as a base (usually the Vought corporation’s evils) to go in different directions.

The latter may be most intriguing. The Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg tribute to ‘Looney Tunes’ and Roger Rabbit features a superpowered baby causing mayhem. Or Justin Roiland, creator of ‘Rick and Morty’, who unleashes his great ability, the avalanche of delirious secondary characters, with a group of teenagers with ludicrous powers who want revenge on their parents. Or the one co-written by comedian Ilana Glazer, in which a Voight cream that changes look satirizes our image reliance.

In these free-wheeling episodes, the authors can freely counter or supplement ‘The Boys’ ideas, which provides the most fascinating results. Roiland’s, one of the best, reimagines the X-Men and Marvel’s youngest mutants’ interactions with their parents by giving its youngsters ludicrous powers. Of course, ‘Rick and Morty”s gory and wild humor remains.

Each episode is a strange delight to enter without knowing the outcome and be startled by its proposals. The one created and starring Awkwafina parodies the visual constants of the craziest anime to reformulate cutesy shit, one of the most fascinating Japanese pop culture obsessions.

Perhaps Andy Samberg’s disappointed devotion to an unexpected, more or less pure Korean horror drama, in line with Steve Ahn’s aesthetic but out of sync with the lighter tone, is unfortunate. Or the last one, by Simon Racioppa, producer and screenwriter of the brilliant ‘Invincible’, who is too concerned with ‘The Boys’ continuity to be fascinating.

Even limping superheroes are remarkable adult animation. As we said, the global viewpoint is fascinating, and while ‘The Boys’ is easy to watch, ‘Diabolical’ goes beyond the preface for the third season. The superhero-narrator and caustic social network vision in numerous episodes are already exceptional.

It is based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book series of the same name and spins off from The Boys. Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Simon Racioppa, executive producers of The Boys, conceived the series.

Each episode is a standalone story rooted in the live-action series’ setting, with a comic or serious tone and a different animation style. Writers include Ennis, Racioppa, Rogen, Goldberg, Justin Roiland, Ilana Glazer, Awkwafina, and Andy Samberg. Voice actors Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Colby Minifie, Chace Crawford, Elisabeth Shue, and Giancarlo Esposito reprise their roles from the live-action series

Diabolical garnered great reviews for its animation, voice acting, script, humor, and themes.

The Boys Presents: Diabolical was unveiled at Prime Video’s 2021 CCXP Worlds panel in Brazil. An animated anthology series set in The Boys universe, executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg compared it to The Animatrix. Diabolical features eight new stories by Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, Andy Samberg, and Aisha Tyler.[5] March 4, 2022 marked the series’ debut.[6]

Eric Kripke said Diabolical was conceived during the COVID-19 epidemic when the producers wanted to release something while waiting for season three of The Boys. Due to limits on most live-action films, they tried making an animated anthology with varied styles.[7]

The initial teaser trailer in February 2022 showed several significant cast members, including several creators.[8] A comprehensive trailer with the large cast debuted later that month. This included the announcement that Pegg would voice Hughie Campbell, a character he had long identified with, although he was too old to play in live action by the time the series was made.[3][7]

Eric Kripke later revealed that the show’s production staff only regarded three episodes canon while advertising the entire show as such. These are “Nubian vs Nubian”, “John and Sun-Hee”, and “One Plus One Equals Two”. A follow-up comment explains that the other episodes are in their own multiverse continuity, but “I’m Your Pusher” is situated in the comics reality.
