After patients risked losing coverage, NYP and Aetna reach deal.

The NewYork-Presbyterian health system has recently negotiated an agreement with the insurance company Aetna, just a few days before their contract was scheduled to end.

This agreement has prevented the anticipated loss of coverage for tens of thousands of patients.

According to authorities with the health system, the deal will ensure that the ten hospitals, a variety of clinics, and thousands of physicians that are affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian would continue to be part of Aetna’s network.

As stated in a statement released on Wednesday, “Both NewYork-Presbyterian and Aetna are pleased to come to an agreement that puts our patients first,” said Angela Karafazli, a spokesperson for New York-Presbyterian.

Wednesday was the day that neither NewYork-Presbyterian nor Aetna disclosed any additional information regarding the length of the new contract or its respective parameters.

Over the past few weeks, the health system has threatened to terminate relations with Aetna due to the fact that contract discussions have been delayed. Additionally, the health system has sent letters to individuals telling them that they may lose coverage for their health care providers. According to a letter sent out by NewYork-Presbyterian on February 26, the organization stated that Aetna had “presented an unreasonable offer” and recommended patients to discuss alternative insurance alternatives with their employers.

The insurer and the health system would have allowed their contract to expire at the end of the month, which would have resulted in certain NewYork-Presbyterian clinicians being removed from the Aetna network as early as April 1.

This issue is reminiscent of a similar disagreement that occurred between UnitedHealthcare and Mount Sinai, which is also located in the state of New York, regarding reimbursement rates. This feud was finally settled on Tuesday, but not before it caused thousands of New Yorkers to experience disruptions in their coverage.

Sarah Digby, a client of Aetna, expressed that she felt so relieved by the news of the NewYork-Presbyterian arrangement that she wanted to cry when she heard about it on Gothamist. Now that she is receiving treatment for endometriosis, she will be able to maintain her care team within the hospital system where she is being treated.

However, Digby also expressed that she did not enjoy the growing trend of hospitals and insurers including patients in the process of contract negotiations within their organizations.

“Patients should not feel as though they are pawns in a bidding war between these large health care institutions and these health insurance carriers,” she added. There is a big difference between the two. “I am unable to go through this every single year.”

She continued by saying that she had been unable to sleep for several weeks due to the matter.

“We appreciate NewYork-Presbyterian and their partnership in this contract renewal discussion, and we continue to value the critical, long-standing provider relationship,” Alex Kepnes, a spokeswoman for Aetna, said in a statement regarding the transaction. “We feel that this relationship is extremely important to us.”

This is the continuation of a connection that has existed between the two health care organizations for more than thirty years, he continued.
