Following the carriage sequence that has been the subject of much debate, Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton, finally utters the words that fans of the Shonda Rimes series have been eagerly anticipating: “For the love of God, Penelope Featherington, are you?” Is it true that you are planning to marry me or not? The fact that Penelope, played by Nicola Coughlan, is the much-maligned Lady Whistledown is something that Bridgerton does not yet know about in the series. Nevertheless, in the book, she is aware of it, and she makes the proposal to him while she is aware of her secret identity.
The popular production that can be found on Netflix is based on a series of novels written by Julia Quinn, an American author. These novels tell the stories of the love lives of the Bridgerton brothers and sisters respectively. The narrative of Penelope and Colin is told in the fourth novel of the Quinn saga, which is titled “Seducing Mr. Bridgerton,” rather than in the third novel, which is concentrated on the story of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson). In this particular instance, the series has not followed the order of the author’s works.
Due to the fact that Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), one of Colin’s sisters, was the first person to learn about Penelope’s literary endeavors in the previous season of the series (which premiered the first part of the third season on May 16 and the second part on June 13), the series maintains a distance between the two characters in the first part of the new season.
However, in the book, Eloise is kept in the dark, and it is her brother Colin who makes the discovery of the true Lady Whistledown. Colin spots Penelope getting into a hired carriage, and he follows her to a chapel that is located a significant distance from the London area where they live and where they conduct a portion of their business.
As was to be expected, the news does not sit well with Colin. The novel depicts his wrath, primarily because of what could happen to Penelope if they uncover the truth, and eventually a certain jealously due to the fact that Colin does not run the family estate. like Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) nor paints like Benedict (who in the narrative has an already established artistic career), she wants to achieve something meaningful and learns that she already did it with her years of professional gossip as Lady Whistledown. While Benedict has an established artistic career, she cannot paint like Benedict. Nevertheless, there is no need to be alarmed because everything is settled in an unexpected manner, which in turn reveals Colin’s love for Penelope.
One thing that both the novel and the series have in common is that Cressida Cowper, played by Jessica Madsen, is not a character that is particularly well-liked by the audience. On the other hand, the young woman is depicted in the series as a single woman who is hunting for a marriage. Following the breakup of Penelope and Eloise, she eventually becomes friends with the restless Bridgerton, from whom she, by the way, conceals a significant secret.
In Quinn’s fourth chapter of the Bridgertons, which focuses on the “Polin” romance, Cowper is actually the widow of Lord Twombley, who has not left her in a particularly good financial situation. This fact is revealed in the fifth edition of the Bridgertons. Cressida claims that she is the person who is responsible for the identity of Lady Whistledown when Lady Agatha Danbury, played by Arsema Thomas, offers a substantial reward to anyone who can expose the name of Lady Whistledown. The fact is that they do not believe him.
Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) also has a prominent place in the first half of the third season, despite the fact that Penelope and Colin are the primary characters of the first part of the season. Francesca makes her debut, finally impresses the queen with her musical abilities, and starts the process. We should look for applicants who are familiar to us from previous episodes of the series. She starts out with a completely realistic outlook, which does not indicate that she will have a successful romantic relationship until she meets the Earl of Kilmartin, played by Victor Alli.
This story holds a lot of potential, but those who have read the book are aware that it is a tragic ending: the Earl of Kilmartin passes away after a brief marriage to Francesca, who, in the novel that corresponds to the season, is already a widow and spends some of her time in Scotland. Throughout the course of his novels, Quinn, on the other hand, gives him a second chance.
Throughout the course of the book, she is not the only Bridgerton character whose marital status shifts. Benedict has already tied the knot by the time “Seducing Mr. Bridgerton” begins. In the meantime, we will have to wait for subsequent seasons to see her play out her love story on film.
According to our knowledge, Penelope does not possess what is commonly said to as a strong connection with her sisters Philippa (Harriet CaĆn) and Prudence (Bessie Carter), who are married and under the influence of their mother to conceive a child.
In contrast, her perspective on her family is more positive in the novel since she has another sister named Felicity. Felicity is the youngest of the four sisters, and she has a positive relationship with her who is also the youngest. Hyacinth Bridgerton is another person with whom Felicity shares a very strong friendship. As a side note, her mother has the intention of putting Felicity in a relationship with Colin, which is obviously not going to take place.
The character of Lord Alfred Debling, played by Sam Phillips, who would have ended up being married to Penelope if the series had gone in a different (much more disappointing) route, does not appear in Quinn’s book.
Penelope does not have another suitor about to propose to her when Colin realizes his feelings for her and, by the way, he does not ask the third of the Bridgertons for help in finding a husband (if you do not remember what the order of the brothers is, resort to the alphabet, since in that order they were baptized by Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and her late husband: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesa, Gregory (Will Tilston), Hyacinth (Florence Hunt).
The events of the novel “Romancing Mister Bridgerton” take place in the year 1824, which is a full decade after the wedding of Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma. The third season, on the other hand, begins events only a few months after the wedding of that pair. She is a “spinster” who is 28 years old, and he is a global wanderer who is 33 years old. This indicates that the characters Penelope and Colin in the novel are far older than their screen counterparts. (The youngest daughter of the Featherington family is approximately 19 years old, while the Bridgerton son is 24 years old in the Netflix show.)
In addition, it indicates that Pen has been pining for her best friend Colin for a significantly longer period of time on the page than she has on screen. In the book, she describes how she fell in love with Colin for the first time in 1812, just two days before she turned 16 years old. However, for those who watch the show, the wait for these two to finally get together after three seasons has probably felt just as long.
In the third season, a little scandal occurs when it is revealed to the rest of the Ton that Colin Bridgerton has been teaching Penelope Featherington charm classes in order to assist her in finding a romantic partner. (You see, young Pen is getting a little bit frantic to move out of her mother’s house and have a husband and household of her own. She is currently in her third season out on the marriage mart.)
On the other hand, those lessons in charm never take place on the text; in fact, Lord Debling, who is portrayed by Sam Phillips and is Penelope’s second prominent suitor in season 3, does not even exist in the books. The new “Bridgerton” character, on the other hand, appears to have been conceived of as a means of inducing feelings of jealousy in Colin and of keeping our two romantic heroes apart for a few episodes.
