The second season of the divisive Tolkien adaption is full of opportunities to establish its worth.

Prime Video’s debut season of “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” was unquestionably Amazon’s most risky endeavor to date. It took a page out of Tolkien’s and Peter Jackson’s combined imagination by licensing the rights to a renowned fantasy series and presenting its own vision, which was at odds with the canon.

Going all in, over 700 million. Unprecedented financial investment on the part of Amazon: while Netflix was prepared to spend $250 million for the rights alone, Tolkien’s heirs were unconvinced by the streaming service’s Marvel-style strategy and instead sold them to Amazon for a little less. The costs hadn’t even started to add up: Prime Video spent 465 million dollars on the first season’s creation, not including the purchase of the rights.

Just how many individuals tuned in? While we were unable to obtain more precise data due to Amazon’s customary audience opacity, the company did announce 25 million viewers on the first day of the series’ premiere. When the first season was halfway through, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke told Variety that they were already reaching 100 million viewers and expected that number to climb.

Speculation by an unofficial source. ‘The Rings of Power’ had 30.5 times more demand than the average American series in its first month of life, according to data analysts such as the company Parrots Analytics. The demand was measured by the series’ impact on social networks or the number of downloads, and the results were undeniably positive. Its closest rival, “House of the Dragon,” which they calculated to have twice the audience size, came out on top in the same computations. To rephrase, there are some valid points of criticism, but the overall impression is a positive one.

Unsatisfactory connection. Among the most ardent fans, the series has a terrible reputation, and nothing here can change that. When it comes to rating aggregator websites like Rotten Tomatoes, there is a huge gap between critics’ and the public’s opinions. Amazon has also made some poor choices in this area, like removing excessively low ratings from rating aggregators it owns like IMDB or its own Prime Video platform. How is Season 2 different from Season 1? Less than what appears on paper. Being back as showrunners is a vote of confidence in John D. Payne and Patrick McKay’s first season proposal. They have stated on multiple occasions that the roadmap was set from the start and for five seasons, so it’s reasonable to assume that, despite the many negative reviews Amazon has received, they will stick close to the original plan if the audience figures have been at least somewhat satisfactory.

Greater Sauron. So far as we can tell from the premiere of Season 2, we already know who the show will be about: After the first season left Sauron as a mystery, viewers are hoping to get some answers regarding his background in this one, now that his identity has been revealed. As was done with Galadriel, we shall witness the return of Morgoth and other strange gods and locations in Middle Earth adaptations if the Sauron experiment is repeated while staying true to Tolkien’s canon. Which, for once, is sure to be a welcome shift.

When streaming is not an option. Streaming platforms have been steadily cutting spending policies for a few months now. Apple is bringing premieres straight to its platform following a string of box office bombs (and we might not see $200 million productions anymore). Max, which has been cutting for more than a year, decides how to license its material to the other platforms. Although Netflix has emerged victorious in the streaming competition, its subscribers still face limitations on account sharing and significant fee hikes.

Amazon, you won. One possible perception of Prime Video’s financial situation is that Amazon lavishly sponsors pricey programs like “Citadel,” which has been one of the most publicized flops of late, with a limitless supply of cash. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” isn’t in a jam because, as we’ve seen, it sticks to its original plan and, as far as we can tell, viewers have had mixed reactions. Yet, a corporation cannot sustain an annual loss of $700,000,000.00.

According to that logic, Prime Video serves as an excellent (although pricey) advertisement for Amazon Prime, the paid subscription service that Prime Video users really pay for.
