The first season of 'The Lord of the Rings:

A backstory has been revealed for the dreadful antagonist from “The Lord of the Rings,” at long last.

Some fortunate individuals have been able to get a sneak peek at the first episodes of the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power,” which will premiere right now, on August 29, and confirm what the final stretch of the first season of the Amazon series hinted at: a significant portion of the show’s protagonist, Sauron, will be the protagonist. In spite of the fact that his presence was not made clear in the initial batch of episodes, his menace was clear due to the fact that he used deception, falsehoods, and disguises. The second season is going to bring about a change in this regard, as Sauron is going to show himself in all of his malevolent glory.

We were transported to the Second Age of Middle-earth during that first season. It was at this time that the dreaded Sauron was escaping after the defeat of the Dark Lord Morgoth, an entity that was even more powerful than Sauron and whose roots trace all the way back to the beginning of Middle-earth when it was first created. In that particular edition, Charlie Vickers brought Halbrand/Sauron to life by portraying him as a warrior who had a history that was filled with darkness, but who was able to bring Galadriel herself into deception.

Patrick McKay, who is one of the showrunners for the series, recently gave an interview to ScreenRant in which he discussed how the history of Sauron will have an impact on the second season. In addition, he provides a parallel in order to provide us with an idea: in the same way that the beginning of the first season concentrated on the origins and motivations of Galadriel, this season will focus on those of Sauron. To put it another way, we are in for a year that is going to be filled with an awful lot of darkness. One that is significantly more ominous.

“At one point, we wanted to include some of that material in the first season, but we felt that the story would benefit even more if we left it for the beginning of the second season,” McKay adds in the interview. “We felt that the story would benefit even more if we left it for the third season.” Therefore, it is true that we were aware of this background information, and we have always had a strategy for the overall progression of the characters and the stories.

The plan to discuss Sauron’s beginnings was always present, as evidenced by the following statement: “One of the first ideas, in terms of working the sequences and the kind of pacing of season 2 was that we were going to start the season with Sauron’s origin story.” When we were still working on the first season, we began writing it during this particular season, which was in the thick of the pandemic. Therefore, it has come a very long way.

However, there are certain distinctions between that Sauron and the all-powerful eye that we encountered in Peter Jackson’s films, and it is of course that McKay and the other creators of the series intend to take use of those contrasts. During the course of our discussion of the beginnings of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord of Middle-earth, we had already mentioned that Sauron was born as an angelic spirit known as Mairon. Without a shadow of a doubt, that has left an imprint on his psyche, which is not yet entirely bent toward evil as it will be when he becomes the terrifying second Dark Lord.

Something that is extremely interesting about all of this is that if McKay’s promises are fulfilled, we will reach a part of the lore of “The Lord of the Rings” that is barely exploited in its audiovisual adaptations, and this is something that is always quite appealing. Not only because of Sauron, but because of that great unknown to the general public that is Morgoth: if we know more about him we will know more about the semi-divine Valar, we will see the origin of the most terrifying races of Middle Earth, and as it is impossible to fully understand the evil of Sauron without knowing that of Morgoth, we will have to go back decades in the past, to a Middle Earth that has literally never been put into images.

Is it possible for Amazon to go off on a tangent and come up with a far different and significantly more “human” genesis for Sauron? Indeed, it is. However, there are several visuals in the trailers that already suggest to a different depiction of Middle Earth than what is presented in Peter Jackson’s films (and in the first season of the series itself). An outlook on the future that ought to excite and excite someone who is not only a fan of Frodo and his companions, but also of the entire intricate network of ties and beginnings that Tolkien utilized in order to describe the foundations of his universe.
