Sam Altman managed the Y Combinator incubator and helped Reddit, Airbnb, and Spotify succeed before directing OpenAI and developing ChatGPT to change the world.

As a mentor, Altman learned how to develop a long-term career. The OpenAI CEO wrote about some of those lessons on his blog to establish a career.

Altman thinks most people overestimate risk and underestimate return. Risk-taking is difficult, especially when one lacks experience or expertise.

The millionaire advises taking measured chances early in one’s career to learn to face them and remove the fear of risky paths as one grows. Altman says returns usually outweigh losses, especially early in careers.

Successful entrepreneurs like Bernard Arnault realize that mistakes will happen, but they must be learned from and avoided. Sometimes you can’t avoid them, so learn from Bill Gates and prepare for the worst and best.Sam Altman uses Airbnb as a perseverance example in his post. “They managed to survive long enough for luck to be on their side.”

Staying positive and driven to attain your goals helps you keep on track until the right opportunities come along.

At the same time, optimism helps you overcome the inevitable obstacles.

Mr. Beast, a billionaire YouTuber with approximately 300 million subscribers, agrees. Everyone who asks him how to start a YouTube channel gets the same advice: “Record 100 videos. Each one should be improved.” The emphasis on process, gradual learning, and incremental growth that only comes from consistent practice makes this methodical consistency powerful.

Altman doesn’t recommend burying yourself and digging a trench. Warren Buffett’s moat hypothesis compares companies’ and individuals‘ strategic advantages to medieval fortress moats. The enemy struggled to breach these fortifications’ walls with larger and deeper moats.

Professional or corporate moats are advantages, abilities, expertise, or other differences that give you an edge over other employees, organizations, or competitors. Long-term moat creation and maintenance make a person or corporation more valuable and indispensable. “If you do the same thing as everyone else, it won’t be difficult to compete with you,” advises Sam Altman.

A popular adage is: “Only you will get there faster, but with someone you will get there further.” The OpenAI co-founder told Bill Gates’ Unconfuse Me podcast that he is still astonished by the amount of aid he receives from people he helped a decade ago.

Keeping someone’s number in your address book to call when you need something is not how you build a solid network. Altman advises, “Helping others is a great way to network. It will return increased by 1.” But the OpenAI executive warns: “Remember to spend your time with positive people who support your goals.”
