“Die With a Smile,” Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ anthemic pop-rock duet released on Friday (Aug. 16), hopes to capitalise on their star power for a Hot 100 debut. From the duet’s opening-day figures, it seemed unlikely, but it has been growing over its first week, and now a top-tier debut may be possible.

After debuting with 2.78 million U.S. on-demand audio streams, Luminate said that “Smile” maintained that pace over the weekend. On Monday (Aug. 19), the song had 3.52 million streams, up 34% from the day before. By Wednesday, the song topped the Spotify Daily Top Songs USA and real-time Apple Music charts. Over 14,000 digital songs were sold in its first four days, and it topped the iTunes chart for virtually the entire period.

Pop fans may have discovered the song when the workweek began, or TikTok users may have started like its hooks. Whatever happens, “Smile” might add to Mars and Gaga’s long track records’ top 10 early next week. Jason Lipshutz

Taylor Swift released a new music video for “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” on Tuesday night (Aug. 20) to conclude her five-night performance at Wembley Stadium and the Eras tour’s European leg. The video includes behind-the-scenes footage of the mega-selling tour. This week, The Tortured Poets Department, which has topped the Billboard 200 for 15 weeks, has the anthem about shining in the spotlight despite inner agony.

“Broken Heart” has quietly been rising on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a multi-platform hit, unlike “Fortnight,” the album’s initial song with Post Malone.

For its passionate delivery and lyrics of queer love and longing, the long-teased song has garnered praise and comparisons to Hozier’s “Take Me to Church.” However, religious TikTokers have criticised its “I don’t believe in God/ But I believe that you’re my savior” chorus. Perez replied to the criticism by stating in a TikTok caption on Aug. 19 that changing the lyric was never a topic of discussion. This applies to all artists: my songwriting is not a democracy.

The “Sailor Song” debate has only increased its popularity. It debuted with 3.9 million U.S. official on-demand streams on the tracking week of Aug. 1, according to Luminate, a huge number for a new song by an artist without chart history.
