I've played 'Star Wars Outlaws'

Having achieved success with the ‘Avatar’ franchise, Ubisoft is now applying its sandbox gameplay to other franchises.

There is a solid reason why it is one of the games that people are looking forward to the most right before the commencement of the 2024-2025 school year. It is no longer only that we are talking about the first entry into the sandbox format of a franchise as relevant as “Star Wars” (although certainly there have been previous forays to open worlds in the series, as well as a handful of massively multiplayer online role-playing games), but the initial developments are showing a great deal of promise. We have come to Malmo, to the studios of Massive Entertainment, in order to get a firsthand look at it. While there, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the new features that this game has to offer.

We have gained an understanding of the concept that Massive is working on and what they intend to portray with their approach to “Star Wars,” which obviously can be done in a variety of different ways. This was accomplished through a number of conversations and test sessions over there. What ‘Outlaws’ is searching for and why its approach to the trademark can mean a refreshing facelift for the games that are inspired by the series have been summed up in a few key points that we have provided.

As soon as the idea of a “Assassin’s Creed in the Star Wars universe” was brought up, a lot of players, including myself, raised their eyebrows with a certain amount of skepticism. The shadow of sixty-something hour games, full of secondary missions and filler collectibles, weighs too much for those of us who believe that, even within the sandbox genre, some restraint is always appreciated. Although UbiSoft’s most emblematic franchise has taken some turns in recent times, with proposals of a more moderate length and scope than behemoths like ” AC: Valhalla,” the shadow of these games is too much for those of us who believe that.

To begin, Outlaws is comprised of approximately twenty-five to thirty hours of gameplay, which is roughly equivalent to the duration of a game like Assassin’s Creed or Far Cry. That necessarily entails – or at least that is what Massive has promised us – more compact missions, no filler side missions, and a greater focus on the story: it is an open world, and there is exploration and wandering around wastelands on unknown planets, but everything is geared more toward the story progressing at a steady and constant pace, without giving the player the need to take several hours off from the main plot. As a result, the story will dominate the game.

In actuality, it is possible to say that Star Wars condenses very distinct sagas from each other, and for that same reason, it has extremely diverse tones. This is one of the reasons why Star Wars is so amazing. It spans a big number of different eras and places. The events that take place in “The Acolyte,” which take place at a moment in time that is effectively the beginning of the franchise, have nothing to do with “The Mandalorian,” as the Empire has failed by the time the original trilogy is finished. In contrast, Massive has taken a precautionary approach with the release of ‘Outlaws’ by going to a point in the series that is already well-known to readers.

The events of ‘Outlaws’ take place between ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’. At the time, the Empire is in the midst of its reign and the only thing that is bothering it is the growing number of terrorist groups that are devoted to the previous rule. With that being said, the criminals who make a living outside of these cosmic wars will be the subject of our attention right now. In other words, ‘Outlaws’ pulls off a double trick: chronologically, it jumps to an unknown period, and in terms of setting, it focuses on characters that are analogous to the most beloved character in the movie, Han Solo, who is a smuggler.

Obviously, the open universe does not include everything that “a galaxy far, far away” is capable of including; rather, it is limited to a small number of planets and moons that are connected to one another. These are the items in question:

As for Toshara, the new moon that was developed especially for this game: A deadly moon that is filled with corruption and is governed by an imperial governor who is of the same corrupt nature. To a large extent, it is a virgin moon that has not been explored, with the exception of the regions where the Governor’s minions reside, as well as the underworld and syndicates that operate in the region.

When they were working on the game with LucasArts, the first thing that Julian Gerighty, the creative director of the studio, and Mathias Karlson, the director of the game, asked themselves was, “Who are some of the characters that they enjoy playing the most in the game?” The response came almost immediately: it was not the Jedi or the rebels, but rather the criminals who operate outside the law, the Han Solos of the Star Wars series. This was made very evident to us by the motto that the team of 600 developers at Massive functioned by, which was as follows: “Be a scoundrel in a galaxy of wonder and opportunity.”

The entire game revolved around this experience: you have to earn a reputation and prestige as a thief by interacting with various characters and criminal syndicates and accepting missions for each one. You are also preparing for what is going to be a huge hit, about which we have very little information right now, but as usual, it is about robbing a thief. Yes, certainly, ‘Outlaws’ works largely within the heist genre, which potentially connects it with ‘Rogue One’, ‘ Han Solo ‘ or, why not, ‘Episode IV’ itself, which to a significant extent dealt with entering the Death Star to get out of there with a highly precious item for the Rebels.

On the other hand, we are dealing with a sandbox, which means that the game is one in which the protagonist is required to make some kind of progress. In this instance, it has been suggested in a manner that is considerably less complicated than the more common practice of experience points: each advancement for our character is a short adventure. Through the experts, who are individuals that are dispersed over the galaxy and possess valuable information, and who will supply us with abilities and items: they will teach us what to do in order to unlock, for instance, a new feature that is essential to our adventure. For these, we will have to put in some effort, either by locating an item or by finishing a new assignment.
