You know cruises are fun if you’ve been. To give passengers the best cruise experience, cruise ships are improving their attractions and entertainment.

You may see false advertising. Some ships are massive and luxurious beyond your wildest dreams. Others can be small and claustrophobic, with poor entertainment that doesn’t meet your high expectations. Prepare for all the cruise truths in this article.

Actually, you have to wait in queue for an hour to stare at the cruise ship you’ve been dreaming about for months. Imagine holding an ice cream cone in front of a three-year-old. The whole process takes longer than airport boarding and exhausts you so much that you lose interest in boarding. You heard right—boarding is painfully slow.

You think Disneyland lines are bad? Wait until you’re one of these people waiting to board. Lines may stretch for hours before boarding the cruise. Security, passport control, and, worst of all, customs (even if you never stopped overseas) make this necessary. After boarding, more awaits!

Cruise ships’ pools are usually their biggest draws. Like the hot tub, you imagine the cruise ship pool as a private beach pool with water slides. Imagine a water park on top of your cruise ship with only you waiting in queue. However, the picture is not as rosy as shown.

Consider a ship with 3,000 passengers and limited pool and deck chairs. More people than chairs may be present, and some are children who will not sit quietly for 30 minutes while using every inch of space. To ensure everyone has fun and no one is left out, the pool has rules.

Instead, realise that everyone thinks like you. Vacationers’ top spot is the pool. This place is always packed and the pools are smaller than expected. The ship may have multiple pools so everyone can swim, but it will never meet your expectations.

It’s true that other kids will ask you for a piggyback around the shallow end. I hope you like it. The pool is a major draw on cruise ships. Who wouldn’t want poolside days? Go straight to the pool to enjoy everything your ship has to offer. But what if it’s not what you wanted? Do not disappoint yourself. Swimming pools are busy, even if you find a comfortable chair.

Those who have never been on a cruise ship may be unsure what to expect in their bathroom. You probably compare it to hotel bathrooms and form a mental image. Will marble countertops appear? Maybe a jacuzzi tub to fulfil your rooftop hot tub dreams?

Large cruise ships are a problem. Restroom space is limited due to storage space. Most people choose public space over restrooms because public space is used more often. This is why ships don’t have your dream restrooms.

This is a hit with older cruisers. Sailing the blue ocean, you expect to see dolphin pod after dolphin pod. You see yourself at a Sea World but in the wild. There are people who think that cruise ships travel on populated areas of the ocean like it’s some sort of whale watching tour that could entertain them. They couldn’t be more wrong.

The journey is not as entertaining as they expect, at least nobody really gets to see a dolphin show. Travelers who expect to encounter dolphins while at sea are in for a treat. I should know because I’ve been on a few cruise ships. There were times when I was hopeful that we might see more than one pod of dolphins, but we did not. It was a letdown for me as I was really excited to see families of dolphins swimming around.

If you’re being realistic about sightseeing on a cruise ship, you should probably get used to open water with literally nothing in view. People forget that the ocean is massive and there aren’t planted exotic ocean creatures doing acrobats for cruise ship passengers every hour of every day. So, you need to get used to the ocean, water, more ocean, more water, and pretty much nothing else.

Sorry for the bad news. If you’re the kind of person who needs something to gaze at for hours on end — I’m not sure why, but I believe you are — make sure your cruise schedule includes stops at ports with attractions apart from water. There are places such as San Juan and St. Maarten where you may get off the boat and do things if that’s your thing, and that is how you won’t get disappointed.
